KATRETTER - Efficient Volunteer Assistance in Emergency Situations

KATRETTER is a mobile application designed to support emergency services in quickly informing and mobilizing volunteers in various crisis situations. Developed by CombiRisk - Riskmanagement GmbH in collaboration with the Berlin Fire Department and the non-profit Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS), this app aims to ensure prompt assistance by qualified individuals or willing helpers.

In critical emergencies like cardiac arrest or other crises, the KATRETTER system alerts nearby volunteers through their smartphones. Depending on their registered qualifications, these volunteers, known as "first responders," can start rescue measures even before professional emergency personnel arrive. Alternatively, enthusiastic "helpers" can support the operation by performing simple tasks. The KATRETTER system anonymously selects and notifies volunteers based on their registered qualifications.

Different emergency situations require different types of volunteer support. First responders possess medical training or work in the emergency services field, allowing them to initiate crucial life-saving measures. They can register as first responders, free of charge. On the other hand, helpers can contribute without specific knowledge, whether it's filling sandbags during floods or providing initial care to distressed individuals in crisis situations. Helpers can utilize KATRETTER without specifying a particular qualification, also at no cost.
